Is there a difference between Carat spelled with a "C" and Karat with a "K"?  -J. Brauman, White Plains NY

The purity of the gold is measured in Karats, not to be confused with Carats which measure the weight of diamonds. The Karat of gold indicates how much of the metal in a piece of jewelry is pure gold. Karatage is expressed in 24ths, making 24K gold, 100% gold or pure gold. 18K gold contains 75% pure gold, compared to 14K gold which contains only 58.3% pure gold.

At NAGI Jewelers we prefer to work with 18K gold because its higher gold content gives it a much richer color and stronger luster than lower carat gold alloys. In addition, 18K gold is the world standard for fine jewelry, is less brittle than 14K gold while still remaining durable enough to withstand everyday wear.

Since diamonds are relatively light objects, their weight is measured in units called Carats. Five Carats are equal to one gram. The word "carat" is derived from the carob seeds used to balance scales in ancient times. Carob seeds are extremely uniform in their size and shape making them perfect scale weights.

Even though size and weight are related, it is a common misconception that the carat of a diamond measures it's size. Each carat is divided into 100 parts; each part is called a point. Therefore a diamond that weighs 1.00 carat also weighs 100 points. Carats are interchangeably expressed in fractions, decimals, or points. For example 1/3 carat is .33carat, is 33 points, and 1% carat is 1.50 carats, and 150 points.
