Adams New Canaan, CT The distinctive green color of Emerald is the color of life and of the springtime, as well as the color of Venus, the Roman goddess of beauty and love, which makes it a very appropriate birthstone for the month of May. The first known emeralds came from Egypt's Cleopatra Mines. By modern standards, these emeralds were small and heavily included, but quickly became adornments for the elite and were credited with magical powers. Emeralds are still held in high esteem today, and many of the most famous emeralds can be seen in museums and collections worldwide. The New York Museum of Natural History, for example, has an exhibit in which a cup fashioned from pure emerald which belonged to the Emperor Jehangir is shown next to the "Patricia", one of the largest Columbian emeralds which weighs 632 carats. Perhaps out of all the gemstones, emeralds have been exposed to the most turbulent geological conditions during their formation deep within the earth millions of years ago. As a result of their chaotic birth, emeralds can be characterized by their plentiful inclusions; which do not by any means diminish their beauty or value. For example; an emerald with moderate to heavy inclusions in a deep lively green can have a much higher value than an almost flawless emerald whose color is paler. The most prized emerald hues are vivid green and vivid bluish green, neither too dark nor too light with intense, vivid color saturation. |
