Email us your question today to nagi@nagis.net Will sizing my ring ruin it? I have a ring guard on it, but it makes it uncomfortable and scratches up the ring. -Samantha James Stamford, CT Rest assured that there is a safe method to size just about every ring. For the reasons you already stated, ring guards are only a temporary fix, and you should definitely get your ring sized. Most ring guards are made from inexpensive base metals which can cause irritating allergic reactions. So long as you bring your ring to a proficient jeweler, there is no need to worry about the ring being damaged or its integrity compromised in any way. There are many ways to size rings, and even though two rings may appear to be very similar at first glance, a master jeweler can determine which is the best method for each particular ring. The thickness, design, shape, material, type of stones, number of stones, how they are set, and number of sizes being adjusted; all must be taken into consideration when determining how a particular ring should best be sized. Sometimes, metal must be added or taken away; other times, a ring can be stretched. The amount of metal "lost" when sizing a ring down is usually a very small amount, and most often in the form of tiny filings or dust which is unusable without refining again. Sizing down, doesn't always mean metal will be cut out; in some cases, a ring may be sized down by actually adding metal to the inside of its shank. In some cases, this is done to eternity rings which are set with diamonds all the way around.
Just about all size adjustments, either up or down appear completely seamless when executed properly, and should always be executed using the same carat gold or quality platinum.
Bear in mind that our finger size varies slightly from day to day, getting smaller in colder weather and larger in hot humid days, when our bodies retain more water, and our fingers swell.
