There are many ways to size rings, and even though two rings may appear to be very similar at first glance, a master jeweler can determine which is the best method for each particular ring. The thickness, design, shape, material, type of stones, number of stones, how they are set, and number of sizes being adjusted; all must be taken into consideration when determining how a particular ring should best be sized. Sometimes, metal must be added or taken away; other times, a ring can be stretched. The amount of metal "lost" when sizing a ring down is usually a very small amount, and most often in the form of tiny filings or dust which is unusable without refining again.
