My girlfriend and I were arguing over whether Yellow Topaz or Citrine is the birthstone for November. Which one of us is right? -E. Josephs Stamford, CT I would have to say that you are both right on this one. The confusion may stem from the fact that since antiquity, all yellow gems were called topaz. Yellow Topaz and Citrine are separate and unrelated mineral species yet are often confused with each other since it is very difficult to distinguish between the two. Citrine is a form of quartz, known as "healing quartz" and is considered an alternative to Yellow Topaz as the birthstone for November, thanks to its abundant availability; which make it more affordable than yellow topaz. Citrine is a quartz which varies from pale yellow to rich golden yellow to dark orange in color, and can beautifully brighten almost any jewelry style, blending especially well with the gleam of high polished yellow gold which is back in vogue. This golden gemstone is said to support vitality and health while encouraging and guiding hope, energy and warmth within the wearer. Citrine's availability in large sizes and lively brilliance make it ideal for fashionable extra long necklaces, and wrap around bracelets. Yellow topaz when brilliantly cut, can often be mistaken for a diamond and because of its rarity it is an expensive gem. It is a sturdy gem with lively fire, crystal clear clarity, and beautiful color. Traditionally topaz has been thought to strengthen the mind, increase wisdom, and in ancient lore, it has been said to have the power to cool boiling water. |
